Born and raised in the Tradver’s slum of Copper Fields, Syntheia was destined for a life bound to crime and poverty. Her father was a fence for the Copper Fields Five, and her mother worked as his coin keeper. Never did it pass into Syntheia’s mind that she might wish to find a life elsewhere, beyond the confines of the narrow streets and tightly packed buildings of Tradver’s least impoverished slum. For her, life was good for the most part, and being an only child made her feel like it was a given that she would take over her parent’s business when they could no longer run it.
That was until the brutal reality of that kind of life caught up with her, after witnessing her father lose a hand after intimidation tactics by the Rossa Cartel fell flat against him. Syntheia took over the fencing business soon after, and much younger than she or her parents had planned for her to. Though the approach she took to the business was a far cry from her parents who mostly had an attitude of “live and let live,” she saw the Cartel comes for her father, and she knew at some point they would come for her too. Her approach was much more aggressive, choosing to employ the tactics they used against her father and other Copper Fields Five shopkeepers against their own, starting with the men who took the hand of her father.
She earned a reputation quickly, and her infernal ancestry allowed her to quickly slip away from or destroy any attackers that came for her head. Yet the Cartel chose instead to move past Syntheia, and when they learned of her true identity, targeted her parents instead. It was one afternoon she was returning from the inner city that she saw plumes of smoke towering over the walls, coming from Copper Fields. Her heart sank with anxiety, and though she tried to reassure herself, the worst of her fears were realised as she stood before the burning wreckage of her family home. The doors and windows were bolted shut from outside, and though she tore her way into the building, she was too late to save her parents, with an overwhelming grief taking over her as she collapsed in despair.
She awoke a few hours later, outside her house. Firefighters and mages had doused the blaze before it could spread. Sitting with her was another Nosmeni woman like herself, who introduced herself as a member of the Golden Griffins. She remarked that the Rossa Cartel did something similar to her once, although she lost dozens of people that day. She offered to Syntheia a chance at vengeance against the Cartel, by emptying their coffers and taking the head of their leader at the upcoming sixtieth anniversary weekend of their renowned Crescent Moon Casino. Syntheia agreed, and though she was worried the Cartel might recognise her, her new employer assured her that if they do, things are going according to plan.
